LSU fans have been starving for a
new commitment and on Thursday they got it when Bastrop (La.) wide receiver DeAngelo Benton (6-3, 195,
4.5) became the eighth commitment got 2007.
"Coach (Les) Miles and coach
(Stacey) Searels called me today and offered and I accepted right then,"
How did it feel to get the much
anticipated offer he had been looking for?
"I was real excited," said Benton,
who claims other offers from Ole Miss, Miami,
Florida State, Colorado, Arkansas and
State. "It brought a big
smile to my face."
Benton has always had the Tigers at the top of
his list and he said now one of his dreams has been fulfilled.
"Since I was young, LSU was always
the place I wanted to be," he said. "I had a cousin who went there and that was
all he talked about. I love the coaches and the academic facilities. I feel like
there they are more worried about academics than football."
Speaking of academics, it has been
much talked about the fact that Benton had some work to do in order to graduate
with his class in 2007. He is the second wide receiver to commit to the Tigers
for 2007 but the big question is will either of them be academically
Benton said he has worked hard this past year
and he feels that he feels he will be good to go when the time comes to walk
across that stage.
"I have to take a couple of classes
this summer and I'll be on schedule to graduate," said Benton, who claims a 3.1
GPA and a 16 on the ACT.
With Benton and his teammate, Kantravis Aubrey,
committed to the Tigers, that makes two Bastrop Rams headed to LSU.
However, there could be a third as
Tiger Rag has learned that former Jonesboro-Hodge product Gabriel Bryant plans
to enroll at Bastrop for the 2006 school year and he may be
eligible to play for the Rams due to an LHSAA rule regarding his legal
"He called my cousin and told him
he was coming to play for us," Benton said.
We will have more on Bryant's
situation later but for now LSU fans can rejoice because the Tigers landed one
of the top receivers in the South in DeAngelo Benton.
