Ahmad Black, one of Florida's top defensive backs, told Tiger Rag that he is eager to strap on a helmet and get on the field, and that it will be one of his main criteria for choosing a college. "I want to play early," said Black. "I'll play special teams or something. I just want to get out there."

Last season, as a safety for Lakeland, Fla., Black used his 4.5 40-speed to record 76 tackles, 45 of which were solo.

Although Black is being recruited as a safety and cornerback depending on the school's needs, LSU is recruiting him as a cornerback.

"It really doesn't matter to me; I played cornerback in 10th grade," said the 5-10, 175-pound stand-out. "I've actually played more cornerback than safety."

Black, who earned first team all-county honors as well as second team all-state in Florida, has already received 14 offers.

"Right now, my top five is LSU, Clemson, Alabama, Florida and Ohio State," Black said. "I don't really have a favorite at this point, though."

LSU defensive line coach Earl Lane is recruiting Black and he is using his family ties to try and get the Sunshine State product to bayou country.

"They told me I was at the top of their list," said Black. "He seemed pretty nice and being from Tampa, he actually knows my aunt. So, having a family member he knows is cool, too. They told me they like the way I hit and cover at the same time. They just said they like the way I play."

As far as LSU itself, Black said he likes the prestige it carries.

"They're a pretty decent team and they contend for the national title," said Black. "That's what I want to do, win a championship. I'm also looking for a college that is big, but not too big… well, not too small either."

Black said he will be working to improve his grades next year.

"My first semester I did well and got a 3.7," Black said. "I got a 2.2 the second semester. I made a 15 or 16 on my ACT and an 850 on the SAT."
