Stewart, Waguespack named to All-La. team

Tulane, off a tumultuous season that saw the Green Wave go from chased off its campus by Hurricane Katrina to finishing its season as the only state team in the NCAA Tournament, and Louisiana-Lafayette swept all the individual honors in the 2006 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana College Baseball team.

The team was selected based on nominees from the four-year baseball playing schools in the state and then voted on by a panel of LSWA members.

Rick Jones of Tulane, edged out Chad Clement of McNeese State for Coach of the Year, while Green Wave while Green Wave first baseman Mark Hamilton was chosen as the hitter of the year. Hamilton was the only unanimous player selected on the first team, getting all 30 possible first place votes at his position. Warren McFadden, a first team outfield choice from Tulane, was named the LSWA Freshman of the Year.

Louisiana-Lafayette picked up the honors for Pitcher of the Year in Hunter Moody and Newcomer of the Year for first-year non-freshman players in the state with Canadian Devery Van De Keere.

Also in recognition of its national championship on the junior college level, the LSWA also decided to name LSU-Eunice Coach Jeff Willis as an honorary coach of the year for his efforts this season.

The first team as selected by the voters in addition to pitcher Moody, first baseman Hamilton and outfielder McFadden included: Pitchers -- Bryan Cryer of UNO, Danny Davis of McNeese State and Sean Morgan of Tulane; Catcher -- Jonathan Lucroy of Louisiana-Lafayette; Second Base --  Brandon Morgan of Northwestern State; Shortstop -- Ben Soignier of Louisiana-Monroe; Third Base -- Ryan Hamilton, Louisiana Tech; Outfield -- Mike Epping of UNO, Quinn Stewart of LSU; DH -- Steven Waguespack of LSU; Utility -- Jericho Jones, Louisiana Tech.

For Jones, it was a matter of keeping his team together after the hurricane as he planned to field one of the youngest teams in his 13 years at Tulane. The team spent the fall semester in Lubbock, Texas at Texas Tech before coming home and having to play all its games at the less than cozy confines of Zephyr Field. The Green Wave, playing without six position starters and all three weekend pitchers lost from the prior season, finished 41-19, advanced to the championship round of the NCAA regional and posted an 8-2 record against in-state opponents.

Hamilton puts his LSWA Hitter of the Year honor right next to his Conference USA Player of the Year honor after hitting .338 with 56 runs scores, 12 doubles, 18 home runs, 64 RBI and a .639 slugging percentage. He hit .436 against Louisiana schools with a .769 slugging percentage. He led the Green Wave in home runs, RBI, total bases and slugging percentage. He had 17 multiple-RBI games and 23 multi-hit games.

McFadden also doubled up for the Wave, earning LSWA and C-USA Freshman honors as well as first-team All-C-USA. The team leader in batting average at .381, he also had 22 doubles and 48 RBI. He had 29 multiple-hit games, including a 4-for-5 night against Southern Miss and nine-multi RBI games, including two four-RBI contests.

The Cajuns' Moody had the only double figure win total of any pitcher nominated, posting a 12-2 mark with a 2.63 ERA. He struck out 86 in 113 innings pitched with a .239 opposing batting average. He was named the Sun Belt's Pitcher of the Year and was a Roger Clemons Award nominee. His 12 wins ranked third in the NCAA and he was a perfect 7-0 in conference.

Van De Keere, a junior from Barrhead, Alberta, Canada, earned the state's top newcomer after earning first-team All-Sun Belt honors for Louisiana-Lafayette after leading the Cajuns with a .368 batting average with 41 RBI, nine home runs and a .582 slugging percentage … He had 22 multiple hit and 11 multiple RBI games and made starts for the Cajuns at third base, first base, designated hitter and in the outfield.

Catcher -- Matt Liuzza, LSU. First Base -- Tyler Dugas, McNeese State. Second Base -- J. T. Wise, LSU. Shortstop -- Michael Hollander, LSU. Third Base -- Bryan Cartie, McNeese State. Outfield -- Charlie Kingrey, McNeese State; Dusty Maddox, LSU-Shreveport; Tim Ryan, Centenary. DH -- Justin Darr, Centenary. Utility -- Devery Van De Keere, Louisiana-Lafayette.
