LSU's headman may opt to use that scholarship on another wide out to fill Carter's void and one who is near the top of the list of hopefuls is Lufkin (Texas) standout Dez Bryant.
Bryant, a 6-1, 203-pounder with 4.6 speed, may not blow anyone away with his 40-time but there is no denying that the young man is a big playmaker.
Last season, he showed that in a big way by taking 16 of his 48 receptions all the way to the house for six and amassing over 1,025 yards over the course of the campaign.
The 4-star wide out recently stated that if he had to choose a school right now that LSU would be his choice.
Does he still feel that strong about the Tigers?
"If I had to choose right now it would probably be them but I really don't have a favorite or a Top 5," Bryant explained.
When Bryant does begin to narrow down his list of suitors two schools figure to be major players for his signature and he will be camping at each one next month.
"I haven't been to any camps this summer but I'm going to Texas A&M and then LSU," said Bryant.
The strong connection to Texas A&M lies with Bryant's cousin, E.J. Shankle, who signed with the Aggies in February and whose name should ring a bell with LSU fans.
"E.J. talks about A&M all of the time," Bryant said. "He also talks about LSU too and says how it was such a hard decision choosing out of A&M and LSU. I think with him the biggest thing was that he didn't want to go out-of-state by himself."
Bryant is looking for a place he can feel comfortable at and he is looking forward to the chance to see if LSU feels like home.
"I'm looking forward to meeting the players and coaches when I go down for that camp," he said. "I want to see how they are and how easy they are to talk to and hang out with. I hope I get to sit down with the coaches too and watch some film to see how they play."
Something else Bryant will be closely monitoring are the facilities so he can compare them to A&M.
"I've been to A&M like five to six times and I know they have some great facilities and a nice stadium," he said. "I like how they have jerseys of all of the guys from there that are in the NFL and they have a huge game room for the players to hang out in. I know that A&M's facilities are nice and I hear that LSU's are up there too. I want to see for myself so I can be the judge."
