When coaches can recruit a player for several positions and decide where to put him when he reports to camp with the other freshmen it gives them a little wiggle room to work with on the recruiting front.
As a junior, Brooks logged 43 catches for 778 yards and 13 scores, and also served as MacArthur's backup quarterback. He may not come close to topping the numbers he posted last season because rather than catching passes in 2006 he will use his running and passing skills to lead MacArthur from under center.
Brooks (6-0, 170, 4.5) is
Scout.com's No. 6 rated receiver in
"Most of them (coaches) just say they want to sign me and worry about where I'll play later," said the five-star prospect. "That is fine with me. A lot of them say I could play receiver or corner for them but there are a few that just say receiver."
LSU receiver coach Todd Monken
"Coach Monken said they like my athleticism and that they think I could be a guy that could help out on either side of the ball early on," said Brooks. "That is something that I like to hear because LSU always has good players at every position and for them to think that highly of me is something to be proud of."
Most coaches on the LSU staff are on summer vacation right now but that didn't stop Monken from taking a little time to wish Brooks a Happy Independence Day.
"He text messaged me to wish me a happy fourth and just telling me to be safe," said Brooks.
Brooks has spent the majority of his summer sitting back and enjoying a little rest and relaxation but all of that will change over the next few weeks.
"I've been working out but trying to rest some," he said. "I'm going to a camp at Texas A&M next week and I'm trying to get down to LSU after that."
Transportation is the only thing
preventing Brooks from being a definite show at the Tigers' camp. He said that
if he can't get down to
"That is definitely one of the places I will take an official visit to and I hope to make an unofficial too," stated Brooks.
As for naming a leader, Brooks said that no certain school has emerged from the rest of the pack that includes more than 20 that had offered by his count but six currently stand out above the others.
Note: Brooks claims a 3.0 GPA and is still awaiting the results from his June 10 ACT.
