Deshaun Barnes, a 6-1, 200-pound outside linebacker/strong safety prospect, said he has received more than 25 offers so far, but there is one he is still waiting on.
Last season, for Lincoln High School, Barnes recorded 43 tackles, 2 sacks, two picks, and scored one defensive touchdown, which earned him all-district honors.
Some of the schools the Tallahassee native claims he has received offers from include Florida State, Auburn, Tennessee, North Carolina State, UCLA and Alabama.
"I haven't gotten my offer from LSU yet," said Barnes. "I'm still waiting for it though. I talked with coach (Earl) Lane at the beginning of the summer and he said I should be receiving this summer."
Barnes said that of the schools he has received offers from, his top five consists of Auburn, Tennessee, Florida State, Florida and Miami.
He quickly added that LSU would be in that elite group if the Tigers step up with an offer.
"All I am waiting on is that offer," said Barnes. "I like LSU but it's hard to put them in my top five without an offer."
Although three of the schools from his group of favorites are in-state, Barnes said he won't shy away from leaving Florida.
"It's not going to factor into my decision," he said. "I don't have a problem leaving Florida and going somewhere else. I'm just looking at schools that are going to have the major I want. I'm already ready to get my degree. I'm looking into sports management or business."
Barnes said there are several things he likes about LSU and not all of them have to do with football.
"I really like the program," said Barnes. "They have such great tradition there, too. I also like the fact that they have an excellent track program because I'd really like to run track in college as well."
LSU coaches have told Barnes they like him for a number of reasons.
"Coach Lane said he liked my size and the effort I put out on the field," said Barnes. "He told me to keep up the good work and keep up the good grades. They said with my size and speed I'll either play outside linebacker or strong safety. It really won't matter to me. I just want to play."
Note** Barnes said he has a 3.0 GPA and is awaiting the scores from both the ACT and SAT which he took last month.
