Another Barnes Tripping to LSU

When looking at safety/outside linebacker prospects in the south, one of the top names that come to mind is that of Florida's Deshaun Barnes.

Deshaun Barnes, a 6-1, 200 pound senior at Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, was named to the All-Big Bend team as a junior after compiling 43 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions and one touchdown as an outside linebacker.

Though he did not attend any college camps during the off season, Barnes spent his summer working out and running hard, as well as focusing on staying low on the field, which he thinks will make him an even bigger threat this fall.

In addition to being a big-time prospect at linebacker, his athleticism (he claims a 4.57 in the 40) has also made him a target at safety for several universities.

Barnes says that he has received between 25-30 scholarship offers thus far, but there are five schools that stand out above the rest.

"My favorites are Auburn, Tennessee, LSU, Florida State and UCLA" he said. "Those are the schools I'm interested in getting to know more about."

He also added that he could not label out a favorite of the five, and that they were even in his mind.

When asked what it was he liked about each of his top five, Deshaun said different things about each program.

"I enjoyed talking to the coaches at Auburn that was a plus for them," he said, "Tennessee was pretty much the same, and I like their program. Florida State is a school I've known about my whole life, and people from my school have gone from there to the NFL, and then UCLA has great tradition."

What was it that stood out to him about the Bayou Bengals?

"LSU bounces back really well." Barnes said. "I liked seeing them helping out other people last year. Plus, they have a great program and their defensive backs are always good. They know how to hit and how to tackle, and they are disciplined. That's the way I play."

LSU linebackers coach Bradley Dale Peveto is recruiting Barnes for the Tigers.

"I talked to him back in the spring when he came to watch me practice and we have text messaged a lot since then," Barnes said. "He's a very cool guy and I like him. I haven't talked to coach Miles yet, but I want to when I go visit there."

Another positive for LSU, Barnes said, was the Tiger's championship track team, because he wants to go somewhere that he can run track as well as play football.

Barnes does not have the dates set for his official visits but he has a pretty good idea of when and where they will take place.

"I plan on going to see UCLA officially for a game in October, and then LSU, Tennessee and Florida State for official visits in January," he said.

Academically, Barnes claims a 3.0 GPA and a 16 on the ACT, which he plans to retake at some point.
