TIGER RAG'S TOP 25: Teams 10-6

Today, we bring to you part five of a six-part series counting down the top 30 teams in the Tiger Rag Preseason Top 25 and beyond. Today, we bring you the teams ranked 10-6. Check back to TigerRag.com on Tuesday, Aug. 22 for our top five and the No. 1 team in the nation.

10. Florida State

Mascot: Seminoles

Coach: Bobby Bowden (286-75-4, 30 years)

2005 Record: 8-5 (5-3 ACC)

2005 Bowl: FedEx Orange Bowl – Penn State 26, Florida State 23 3OT

Returning Starters: 12 – 6 offense/5 defense/kicker

TR Take: Florida State is picked to win the ACC this season, but only because Miami and Virginia Tech are both bracing for somewhat of a rebuilding year. Sophomore quarterback Drew Weatherford is good, but the Seminoles won't be so lucky to lose their last three regular season games then back into the ACC title game.

9. USC

Mascot: Trojans

Coach: Pete Carroll (54-10, 5 years)

2005 Record: 12-1 (8-0 Pac-10)

2005 Bowl: Rose Bowl – Texas 41, USC 38

Returning Starters: 11 – 4 offense/6 defense/kicker

TR Take: Like Texas, you don't lose that many impact players to the NFL and keep on cruising at the top of college football. USC will be good again, but c'mon – Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, LenDale White. The Trojans should lose two or three games this season.

8. Oklahoma*

Mascot: Sooners

Coach: Bob Stoops (75-16, 7 years)

2005 Record: 8-4 (6-2 Big XII)

2005 Bowl: Tostitos Fiesta Bowl – Ohio State 34, Notre Dame 20

Returning Starters: 16 – 7 offense/9 defense

TR Take: Bob Stoops and the Sooners found out how the other half lived a year ago. Although most teams would consider and eight-win season a success, that's not the case in Norman. The Sooners return nine on defense, but the key will be a consistent Rhett Bomar and a healthy Adrian Peterson.

7. Texas

Mascot: Longhorns

Coach: Mack Brown (83-19, 9 years)

2005 Record: 13-0 (8-0 Big XII)

2005 Bowl: Rose Bowl – Texas 41, USC 38

Returning Starters: 13 – 6 offense/7 defense

TR Take: Lots of folks have the Longhorns pegged for a possible repeat. However, losing a player the caliber of Vince Young is tough to overcome. Plus, No. 1 Ohio State visits in week two. The Horns will have a another great year, but there will be no crystal football this time around.

6. LSU

Mascot: Fighting Tigers

Coach: Les Miles (11-2, 1 year)

2005 Record: 11-2

2005 Bowl: Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl – LSU 40, Miami 3

Returning Starters: 14 – 7 offense/5 defense/kicker-punter

TR Take: Fans gave Les Miles very little room to maneuver in his first season on the bayou last year. But a 40-3 thrashing of Miami silenced his critics. LSU may be loaded on offense, but the Tigers have to fill holes on the defensive line and  tackle a tough road schedule.

* Oklahoma was ranked No. 8 before quarterback Rhett Bomar was kicked off the team.
