Tiger Rag sources confirmed that Elton defensive tackle Al Woods has been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Woods is the first of four pending LSU freshmen that were cleared by the NCAA. Running backs Keiland Williams and Richard Murphy and offensive lineman Steven Singlton await word from the Clearinghouse.

Woods, a 6-5, 325-pound defensive tackle from Elton High School, recived word this afternoon and will arrive at LSU soon.

LSU coach les Miles was ecstatic about Woods' impending arrival.

"We're excited about the news that we received today on Al," Miles said. "He'll report to campus immediately and we're happy that he'll finally be able to join the team out on the practice field."

Woods was named a prep all-American by several services including Parade Magaizne, USA Today and Reebok. In his senior season at Elton, Woods logged 109 tackles, 12 of which went for losses.

The question now remains: can Woods get into camp and be ready to contribute as a true freshman. Time will tell. Tiger Rag will be on the scene Friday to see if Woods is present for the Tigers' 8:50 a.m. workout.

In other news, it was learned also Thursday afternoon that senior tight end Alonzo Manuel has left the team. Manuel, who had already graduated from LSU, was moved from defensive end to tight end in the spring. No other details were available.
