Tigers' defense ranked No. 1 in nation

Three weeks into the football season and LSU and worked its way to the top of the nation in total defense as the Tigers are allowing an NCAA-best 170 yards per game. The Tigers are also ranked No. 1 in the nation in pass efficiency defense with a rating of 63.5.

Through three games, the Tigers have intercepted six passes, while allowing opponents to only a 46.6 percent completion rate and just 290 yards through the air.

LSU is ranked No. 2 in the nation in pass defense, allowing only 96.7 yards passing per contest and just four yards per completion.

In terms of scoring defense, the Tigers are allowing just 4.3 points per game, which ranks No. 3 in the nation behind Virginia Tech (3.0 points per game) and Georgia (4.0 points per game). LSU, Georgia and Virginia Tech have only allowed one touchdown through the first three games of the year.

In addition, the Tigers have only allowed 13 total points this season, which is the fewest by an LSU team over the first three games of a season since 1964.

Offensively, the Tigers are ranked No. 2 in the conference and 23rd in the nation in total offense with an average of 413.7 yards per game. LSU is averaging 266 passing yards per contest and 147.7 yards rushing a game.

Individually, LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell ranks fourth in the SEC and 14th in the nation in pass efficiency with a 167.8 rating. Through three games, Russell has completed 46 of 72 passes for 718 yards and five touchdowns. He's only thrown one interception this year.

LSU cornerback Jonathan Zenon leads the conference and is tied for fourth nationally in interceptions with three. Zenon has returned two of his interceptions for touchdowns this year.

Tiger defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey is third in the SEC and 10th in the nation in tackles for losses with six to his credit this year. Dorsey, who has claimed back-to-back SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors, had three tackles for losses against Auburn.

LSU defensive end Tyson Jackson is ranked No. 2 in the league and tied for 16th in the nation in quarterback sacks with 2.5 to his credit.
