Russell set one school record and tied two others in the win over Mississippi State. His 272 yards passing in the first half set the school record for passing yards in a half. Russell also tied a school-record by completing 14 straight passes at one point during the game. He tied another school-record for completion percentage by connecting on 18 of 20 passes for the contest for 90.0 percent.
In all, Russell threw for a career-best 330 yards and tied a career-high with three touchdown passes, all coming in the first half. For the year, Russell has completed 81 of 115 passes for ,246 yards, 10 touchdowns and just one interception. He ranks No. 2 in the nation in pass efficiency with a 188.4 rating. He enters the Florida game having thrown 84 passes without an interception.
Russell, who is now 18-3 as a starting quarterback, guided the Tigers to touchdowns on their first five possessions as LSU built a 35-0 lead just 20 minutes into the game.
For the contest, LSU racked up 446 yards of total offense as the Tigers became the first team in modern day school history to score 40 or more points in four of its first five games.
The honor is the first of the year for Russell. It's the second time during his career that he's been named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week. Last year, Russell earned the honor following a road win over Vanderbilt.
It also marks the fourth time this year that an LSU player has been recognized as one of the league's players of the week. Defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey has been named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week twice, while defensive end Chase Pittman has earned the award one time.
Other honors handed out by the SEC on Monday include: Florida free safety Reggie Nelson (defensive player of the week); Tennessee kicker James Wilhoit (special teams player of the week); Auburn guard Tim Duckworth (offensive lineman of the week); Georgia defensive end Charles Johnson (defensive lineman of the week); and Tennessee running back LaMarcus Coker (freshman of the week).
