5-star WR visiting LSU this weekend

At the midway point of the season, the LSU staff has not hosted any recruits for an official visit after four home games. That will change this weekend when 5-star wide receiver Deonte Thompson of Glades Central (Fla.) comes to town for the Kentucky game.

"I'm pretty excited," said Deonte Thompson. "This was really the only weekend I was available, because my schedule is so crazy right now."

Thompson said hopes to figure out a few things about LSU while he is down there.

"I really want to have a good time," he said, "but I also want to get a vibe of what the school is like."

Thompson (5-11, 186, 4.3) said he also has USC, Ohio State and South Carolina on his list of schools to take official visits to along some unofficial trips to some in-state schools as well.

Thompson said all the schools he likes offer him similar opportunities.

"They all have great opportunities for me to come in and be effective in the offense right away," he said. "I've talked with all the coaches about that and I've gotten a pretty good vibe so far."

As for what he sees in the Les Miles' program, it's all about winning and tradition.

"LSU is a winning program with great tradition," he said. "I hear good things about it from coach (Earl) Lane (LSU defensive tackle coach) and I just want to get down there and check it out for myself."

Both Florida and LSU are schools that Thompson is considering and he said after watching last weekends game, he can see himself playing in both team's offense.

"LSU did do a lot of passing that game," he said. "They really throw the deep ball well."

Last season, Thompson caught 35 passes for 767 yards and added another 500-plus in kick returns. That, along with the fact that he posted three straight 40-times under 4.3 seconds at the Jacksonville Combine over the summer, was good enough for Scout.com to tab him the No. 5 receiver in the land.

This year his stats aren't as stellar as they would usually be around this time because he has been battling an injury.

"I've got a broken foot and I've had it since this summer," he said. "I didn't know it at the time so I played two or three games before it really started to bother me."

"I've got something like 10 catches and three touchdowns so far. I'll be out about two or three more weeks then I'll be back in the groove. I'm working out in practice right now. I still have a little soreness, but it will be fine."

Note: Thompson reports a qualifying SAT score and said that his core GPA gives him what he needs to play as a true freshman.
