Tigers move out in front for Florida tackle

If there is one position that LSU does not have a lot of depth at for the 2007 season and beyond it would be offensive tackle. Although the Tigers have two tackles committed for the Class of 2007, the coaches would like to bring in one more and they would love nothing more than for that guy to be Ernest McCoy.

Ernest McCoy, a 6-5, 330-pounder from Belle Glade (Fla.) Glades Central, took his official visit to LSU last weekend with his teammate and good friend Deonte Thompson.

There were several things that stood out in McCoy's mind of his first experience on the LSU campus but one thing in particular really caught his eye.

"The academic support system was really impressive," said McCoy, who claims a 2.5 core GPA and reports a 17 on the ACT. "The academic center is unbelievable and the people I met seem so willing to help me.

"They make sure you get the help you need to be successful. I tend to slip some with my grades and I'm looking for a place that will help me stay straight because my studies are important to me."

McCoy said that he had experienced games at Florida and Miami before venturing into Tiger Stadium and even though he witnessed an outmanned Kentucky team get romped he still got a good taste of what the fans are like.

"It was an awesome game," he said. "They put it on them. I expected LSU to win but not like that."

How did the fans measure up to those in the Swamp and the Orange Bowl?

"I think LSU's student section was louder than any other I've seen," McCoy said.

Ciron Black was the 3-star lineman's player host for the weekend. McCoy said the two hit it off great and that he could say the same thing for everyone he met over the weekend.

"We got along great with everyone," he said. "I feel like I fit right in with everyone at LSU and to be so far away from home it almost felt just like home."

As for LSU's need for offensive tackles, McCoy said that LSU offensive line coach Stacey Searels laid it all out for him and let him know where they stood.

"He told me they are graduating one senior tackle and the guy replacing him will be a senior," explained McCoy. "He said it would be a great opportunity for me to play if I can get in and learn the plays early."

The next scheduled visit for McCoy is a trip out West to USC with Thompson Thanksgiving weekend when the Trojans host UCLA. He also plans to take official visits to West Virginia, Auburn and Ole Miss, along with unofficial to the three Florida schools.

With all of those schools still in contention for his services, though, one school is out in front.

"I'm really leaning towards LSU right now," McCoy said. "I can really just see myself playing at LSU."
