Is LSU a player for Phelon Jones?

Six months ago 4-star cornerback Phelon Jones (6-0, 190, 4.4) committed to Miami. Since then, things have gone downhill for the Canes, and now Jones has opened things up on the recruiting front and LSU is getting some serious consideration from the Mobile (Ala.) McGill-Toolen product.

"There's been talk that Miami is going to fire coach Coker and his staff and that's what is making me reconsider," said Phelon Jones. "Miami has had a couple of troubles lately, including that fight last weekend. That isn't completely the reason I'm thinking about somewhere else, it's just something that I wouldn't have wanted to get involved in if I was on the field."

Jones, who is rated the 4th highest corner by and No. 25 by, has always liked LSU and at one time the Tigers were his top choice.

"I really like the fact that they have a great football team and an excellent track program," said Jones. "I know they've won national championships in both of them recently."

LSU defensive backs coach Doug Mallory has been in contact with Jones and talked to him as early as Tuesday night.

"We just talked about getting squared away for the Alabama game," said Jones. "We talked about all the people I'm going to meet and everything like that."

Jones gave his top teams outside of Miami as Auburn, Florida, Alabama, Virginia Tech, Ohio State and LSU. Although he wouldn't give a favorite, his father and coach Tony Jones said that LSU is a strong candidate at this point.

"LSU to Mobile, if I were to get in my car and drive there right now, it's closer than Auburn or Alabama, so in that respect it's more of an in-state school," said Tony. "LSU has huge support in Mobile and Phelon has always liked LSU."

LSU coaches have been keeping tabs on Phelon since they found out about him backing off of Miami and they evaluated him in person last week.

"Coach Mallory was at our game last Friday watching Phelon play," said Tony. "He said he can do everything he wants to see in a cornerback and that he just does a lot of things right."

Although Phelon doesn't have an official offer from LSU yet, that isn't stopping him from visiting LSU during the Alabama game.

"It doesn't matter if it's official or not, we're going to be there," said Tony.
