Lady Tigers picked third by media

LSU's women's basketball team, the two-time defending Southeastern Conference regular season champions, were predicted to finish third in the race for the 2006-07 SEC title by the media present at the 2006 SEC Basketball Media Days, held Oct. 25-26 at the Birmingham Marriott Hotel.

Sylvia Fowles, a junior center for the Lady Tigers, was unanimously selected to the preseason first-team All-SEC five-member team.

LSU, picked to finish behind Tennessee (all 19 first-place votes) and Georgia, posted a 13-1 record in the SEC last season. The Lady Tigers finished the season with a 31-4 overall mark and advanced to the program's third straight NCAA Final Four.

Fowles received joined Tennessee's Candance Parker as the only unanimous selections on the first-team. Georgia's Tasha Humphrey, Ole Miss' Armintie Price and Florida's Sha Brooks rounded out the first-team.

The Miami, Fla., native averaged 15.9 points, 11.6 rebounds and 2.1 blocked shots last season to earned first-team All-SEC honors. She also collected 16.0 points and a league-high 12.1 rebounds per game in conference play.

The Lady Tigers received 51 points in the voting, three behind Georgia and 34 ahead of fourth-place Vanderbilt. Kentucky was slated fifth followed by Florida, Ole Miss, Auburn, South Carolina, Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi State.

LSU opens the exhibition season on Nov. 1 against Loyola (New Orleans) at 7 p.m. CT in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The regular season gets underway on Nov. 12 when the Lady Tigers host West Virginia in the first game of the three-day Basketball Travelers Classic.
