Mainieri receivers letters of intent from 12

The LSU baseball program received national letters-of-intent from 12 players Wednesday, including eight prospects from the state of Louisiana. First-year LSU coach Paul Mainieri said he expects to sign at least one more player before the signing period ends next week.

Following are quotes from Mainieri about Wednesday's signings and profiles of the members of his first LSU recruiting class. The players are scheduled to enroll at LSU in the fall of 2007.

Quotes from LSU coach Paul Mainieri

"Our focus was on bringing the best players from the state of Louisiana to LSU, and I think we accomplished that objective. We realize that some players in our state had already committed to other schools by the time our staff started at LSU, but I feel the majority of Louisiana's top players will be joining our program.

"We believe that for LSU to return to the pinnacle position in college baseball, we must attract Louisiana's top student-athletes. Our goal is to then supplement our in-state talent with outstanding players from around the country to fill specific needs – which I believe we did with the four out-of-state players.

"(LSU recruiting coordinator) Terry Rooney did a masterful job in putting this class together. I don't think Terry has slept in the four months that we've been at LSU, as he has worked so hard at evaluating and recruiting these young men. This class is very talented, and it includes eight players from Louisiana at this point in the signing period. I just can't emphasize enough that Terry has done a remarkable job, especially considering the fact that he just started the recruiting process in July.

"This class is going to a have major impact upon our program, and that is due in large part to Terry's leadership in the recruiting efforts, as well as the efforts of our other two assistants, Cliff Godwin and Blair Barbier."
