Lady Tigers ranked 10th in AP Poll

LSU's women's basketball team, the 2006 Southeastern Conference champions and 2006 NCAA Women's Final Four participant, opens the season as the 10th-ranked team in the nation by the Associated Press; it was released in the top 25 poll on Wednesday.

LSU, who ended last season ranked fifth in the AP poll, received 748 points in Wednesday's poll. The Lady Tigers sit behind No. 1 and defending NCAA Champion Maryland, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Stanford, Tennessee, Duke, Ohio State, Connecticut and No. 9 Georgia.

This marks the fifth straight year LSU has been ranked in the preseason top 10. The Lady Tigers were No. 3 in 2002-03, ninth in 2003-04 and third in both 2004-05 and 2005-06.

The Lady Tigers, also ranked 10th in the USA today/ESPN/WBCA preseason poll, open the regular season on Sunday against West Virginia at 2 p.m. CST in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The game gets the four-team three-day Basketball Travelers Classic underway.
