5-Star Byrd will be at LSU/Ole Miss

As of now, it does not look like there will be as many visitors on campus when Ole Miss comes to town as there were last weekend but one who will be on campus for an unofficial visit is 5-star wide receiver Demetrius Byrd (6-2, 200, 4.5) of Pearl River Community College.

Demetrius Byrd is Scout.com's No. 2 ranked receiver in the country in the junior college ranks and he has his Pearl River squad making a run at the national championship. So far this season, he has put up good numbers to back up his lofty rating with 43 catches for 702 yards and five touchdowns.

At one point, several schools were in contention for the former Miami Central (Fla.) standout as he considered offers from Tennessee, South Carolina, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Iowa State and Kansas State.

Now, though, it appears that all of those schools are facing a big uphill battle.

"I'm going up for the Ole Miss game this weekend," Byrd told Tiger Rag. "I want to go and watch a game and then go back for my official visit. After I take that visit I should be ready to make a decision.

"I wanted to visit Tennessee, Arkansas, Iowa State and Kansas State but I think now after I take my visit to LSU, I'll know where I want to go."

From the sound of things LSU would clearly be the team to beat but is that the case?

"Yea, they are," he said.

Byrd said he received his official scholarship offer from LSU receivers coach Todd Monken a little over a week ago and the two touch base with one another on a daily basis.

"We text each other every day and we talk a few times a week," Byrd stated. "He tells me that he wants my commitment and to know that I have a spot at LSU."

The close relationship that Byrd has formed with Monken has really helped LSU's cause but he has always had a watchful eye on the Tigers dating back to his days in the Sunshine State.

"I've got a great relationship with coach Monken and I've always wanted to play for them," Byrd explained. "In high school everyone always compared me to Dwayne Bowe so I started watching him and keeping up with LSU a lot."

Byrd will get a chance to meet and hang with Bowe if he does make it to LSU this weekend and Tiger fans can only hope that he can be as productive as the Tiger senior, who will be playing his last game at Tiger Stadium on Saturday.
