Phelon will be at LSU this weekend

Phelon Jones took an unofficial visit when the Tigers defeated Alabama and this weekend he will make a return trip to LSU but this time it will be of the official nature.

Phelon Jones, a 6-foot, 190-pound cornerback with consistent 4.4 speed, is already reaping the benefits from a stellar senior campaign as he was recently selected the Gatorade Player of the Year in Alabama.

The last time we spoke with Phelon, or his father Tony, it was the same day he returned home from the Alabama game.

At that time, LSU had not yet offered but according to Tony things changed shortly thereafter.

"They offered right after that," Tony said. "Since then coach (Doug) Mallory has been a lot to talk to Phelon and they are after him."

This Friday Jones will be making the two and a half hour drive over from Mobile and he has a few things that he is looking forward to in his upcoming visit.

"I just want to get to see the head coach Les Miles and get to talk with the defensive coordinator (Bo Pelini) to get more acquainted with all of them," said the 4-star corner. "I want to get to hang out with the players and see what they are like and everything."

Jones has been lifelong friends with Chevis Jackson ad they already have plans for Jackson to show Jones and his parents the ropes this weekend.

In fact, Jackson is playing a key role in recruiting Jones.

"He just tells me that they have a good program over there that is only going to get better in the next couple of years," said Jones. "He says that I would fit in well with everything try do."

The LSU visit is the only one Jones currently has scheduled but he is considering Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas, USC, Ohio State, Miami, Alabama and Auburn.

Jones committed to Miami back in April but at the moment that pledge does not seem to be too sturdy.

"They're still in it but it's not looking too good for them," he said.

So, does anyone else stand out in that impressive group of schools?

"Not really," Jones said. "They are all pretty much about the same."
