The Jones family reacts to Phelon's decision

Les Miles and the LSU staff went 2-for-2 over the weekend in swiping commitments from other schools.

Mobile (Ala.) Toolen-McGill cornerback Phelon Jones dropped the Miami Hurricanes in favor of the Tigers and then an hour later defensive tackle Drake Nevis of Marrero-John Ehret switched from Ole Miss to LSU.

I met up with the Jones family as they were wrapping up some Christmas shopping at the Mall of Louisiana to pick up some senior footage of Jones and this is what he had to say regarding his decision.

"It was probably because they only have four cornerbacks on scholarship and two of them are seniors so the need to come in and get some playing time as a freshman was real good," said Jones regarding the biggest factors involved in his choice. "I already know Chevis (Jackson) too so he can really help me out."

As for when it came time to let tell the coaches he was ready to be a Tiger this is how it went down.

"He (Miles) just said are you ready to come," Jones said, "and I said yes sir. He got a smile on his face from ear to ear. Coach (Doug) Mallory (defensive backs coach) said congratulations and he was ready for me to come down here and to go to work."

LSU got a good one in Phelon Lones

Mobile is only a two and a half hour drive to Baton Rouge and that is a drive that Phelon's father, Tony Jones, is looking to make many times over the next four years.

"It's great," Tony said. "LSU is the closest college to Mobile even closer than Alabama and Auburn so to be able to come over here and catch not only games but also scrimmages and practices is great. My whole family is elated."

While Tony was extremely happy about Phelon's decision there was someone else who was a little more excited.

"I am absolutely ecstatic about it," said Phelon's mother. "He will only be a stone's throw away. Not only will his immediate family be able to attend all of his games but also his extended family. I come from a family of 10 and I have all of my nieces and cousins who are all big Phelon supporters. They are all looking forward to coming to that stadium and cheering for Phelon."

Note: LSU not only picked up a big commitment from a four-star cornerback but in Phelon Jones the Tigers are also getting someone who brings a lot of character to the program and will be a big contributor on and off the field. There have been some questions posed as to how big Phelon is and I can tell you that he is plenty big enough to play corner and the height and weight listed in our database looks right on target.
