Melancon says he may be close

Lutcher defensive tackle Rolando Melancon (6-1, 270, 4.8) recently received in-home visits from three schools. The schools that visited the 3-star defensive tackle were Tennessee, Ole Miss and Arkansas, and after that tour he said that he has a clear leader and a commitment could be coming.

"I really got along great with coach (Trooper) Taylor and Brooks from Tennessee," said Melancon. "They really graduate a lot of people and I like what they do with their defensive lineman. They move them around a lot and that's what I like to do, jump around and always be moving so I can attack from different angles."

Along with the relationship he has with the Vol coaches, the UT depth chart also played a role in Melancon's decision.

"They will have three seniors on the defensive line next year so I feel like there is some room for me to come in and earn a position," he said. "Tennessee is in the lead and I am really close to committing pretty soon."

Melancon's parents also seemed to get along with the Tennessee coaches.

"They loved coach Taylor, he was extremely funny," said Melancon. "But, I know that whatever I decide they will support me. They know I'm not afraid to go out of state and go to school. I know they'll back me up and everybody is being very supportive. They just know I think about them (Tenn.) a lot."

At one point, Melancon said that LSU was his top choice but what happened to the home-town team?

"I haven't talked to coach Porter since before the state championships," said Melancon. "I saw him at the game but didn't even talk to him. I wouldn't say they're out, I just really like Tennessee right now."

Melancon said he is looking forward to two things at this point in the recruiting process, finishing mid-terms and not receiving so many phone calls.

"I've thought about just turning my phone off," he quipped. "I'm definitely looking forward to getting a break from all this. I finish up with mid-terms Friday, so that will be a good load off. I think I'm going to finish strong this semester."

Melancon said he has not planned a date to make the announcement of his commitment, but that he'll know when the time is right.
