Three JUCO players sign with LSU baseball

LSU will feature three new junior college transfers on its 2003 baseball roster. All have enrolled for the fall semester after signing national letters-of-intent.

The signees are outfielder Bruce Sprowl of Shelton (Ala.) State Community College, outfielder Ryan Patterson of Texarkana (Texas) College and catcher Ty Jensen of the College of San Mateo.

Sprowl, a 5-foot-9, 165-pound left-handed hitter, averaged .343 last season as a freshman at Shelton State, a school based in Tuscaloosa, Ala. He totaled 15 doubles, three triples, four homers, 51 runs and 38 RBI. A Knoxville, Tenn., native, Sprowl has three years of eligibility remaining at LSU.

Patterson (5-11, 195) led Texarkana College to the Texas Eastern Athletic Conference title last season, hitting .439 as a freshman with 25 doubles, 19 homers, 24 steals and 75 RBI. A right-handed hitter, Patterson was a 49th-round draft choice of the Kansas City Royals after his senior year at Rowlett (Texas) High in which he posted a .553 average.

Jensen played two seasons at the College of San Mateo, hitting .320 with 12 doubles, one homerun and 28 RBI last season. The 6-0, 178-pound right-hander was an all-conference player at Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo.
