Jones has one school on top

After taking an official visit to Florida over the weekend, Southern Lab safety Chad Jones has done some rethinking as to what schools are on the top of his list, with the Gators making it into the top two.

"I liked going to Florida," Jones said. "I built a pretty good relationship with the coaches. They moved up into my top two behind LSU. I started comparing schools while I was down there and realized they were ahead the others."

Before the trip,'s No. 1 ranked safety had a top two consisting of the Tigers and the USC Trojans, who he says have now dropped out of his favorites.

"Right now, its LSU and Florida at the top two, then Florida State and USC behind them," he said. "It's around 60% to 40% in favor of LSU right now, and I told the coaches at Florida that this weekend."

Although the visit took place just this weekend, Jones has already received several visits from coaches since returning home, with Florida's defensive backs coach paying him a visit at school on Monday.

"I think they are just trying to pressure me and see where my head is at," he said. "I told him the same thing I did this weekend and that it's about 60-40. I guess he was just showing how much they want me."

In addition to the visit from the Florida coach, Jones also spent some time Monday night visiting with LSU's assistant head coach Larry Porter, DB coach Doug Mallory and defensive coordinator Bo Pelini, as all three coaches visited Jones at home.

"We just kind of talked about the same old stuff," Jones said of his meeting with the Tiger coaches. "They're just keeping in touch with me and seeing what I'm thinking."

With an older brother on the Tiger team just a few miles down the road, Jones has spent many weekends on the LSU campus unofficially, particularly during the season, but says he is still excited about finally making an official trip to the school this weekend.

"To tell you the truth," he said, "I really am excited. I'm excited about getting to talk to the coaches and see what happens from there. They are my leader right now, and I want to spend some time with the coaches and players. Now that I've seen Florida, I want to go and see everything and see if I see things differently."

Is there any chance of Jones making his commitment in the near future?

"It won't be this weekend," he said. "It definitely won't be until after my fifth visit, which will be to either Alabama or Miami. I'm not sure when it will be. It could even be after signing day."

In addition to handling football recruiting, Jones has also been busy preparing for baseball season, as he is one of the top high school players in the country and plans on helping his experienced Kitten ball club make a run on the diamond this year.

"This should be an interesting year," Jones said of the baseball season. "I'm just going to go out there and play, and then see what [baseball] scouts come by the house to talk. I'm not sure how it will all work out."
