McCoy talks about trips and status

LSU fans were in a buzz last Friday when news broke that Ernest McCoy was taking an official visit to West Virginia.

Why did the 4-star offensive tackle from Belle Glade (Fla.) Glades Central find himself in the snowy mountains of West Virginia?

"Defense," McCoy told Tiger Rag. "I wanted to check things out up there because West Virginia is offering me a chance to play defensive tackle as well as on the offensive line."

So, how was the trip?

"It was nice," he said. "I saw snow for the first time and got educated about the campus by the coaches. Everything up there was first class all the way. I just wanted to make sure that LSU is going to be the absolute best decision for me. After this trip I might have a little thinking to do, but I'm still pretty firm in my commitment."

McCoy said he got along well with the Mountaineer coaches as well as some of the players.

"The trips were pretty much the same," said McCoy of his official to LSU and West Virginia. "Both places educated me about their schools and both had really good facilities. They (West Virginia) have a lot of players up there who are from my area. I hung out with Jared Brown who I knew from back home and everybody up there was pretty cool."

McCoy said simply that if LSU were to offer him a chance at the defensive side of the ball, he would no longer have any doubt in his mind as far was which school he'd be going to.

"The coaches at West Virginia said I'd have the opportunity to play defense and that I might get to play defensive tackle," said McCoy. "I like to play defense and that could have an impact on my decision, but it might not. If LSU was to offer that opportunity that would lock up my decision 100 percent."

Are there any other trips on his agenda as we head down the stretch?

"I am supposed to take a visit to Ole Miss this weekend but I have a lot of other things going on right now and I'm just really busy," he said. "I don't know if I'm going to go or not."

McCoy was a big pickup for Earl Lane and the Tigers when he committed because of the big need for offensive tackles.

Lane has proved to be one of the top recruiters on the staff and now the question is can he keep McCoy in the fold?
