LSU suffers 8-1 loss

Junior right-hander Corey Kluber limited LSU to one run on three hits in 6.2 innings Friday night to lead Stetson to an 8-1 victory over the Tigers at Melching Field.

Stetson (4-1) won its third straight game, while LSU (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season.

The teams meet in Game 2 of the series at 2 p.m. EST (1 p.m. CST) Saturday. Sophomore right-hander Louis Coleman (1-0) will pitch for LSU while Stetson will counter with sophomore right-hander Jake Hitchcock (0-0).

Kluber recorded nine strikeouts and two walks Friday in improving his record to 2-0.

"Their pitcher did a nice job in getting ahead of our hitters," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri, "but we had far too many pop-ups and strikeouts. We have to come back tomorrow and be more competitive at the plate.

LSU starter Charlie Furbush (1-1) was charged with the loss, as he allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits in 4.2 innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

"I thought the Stetson hitters were very scrappy; they hit the ball on the ground and some times it found a hole," Mainieri said.

LSU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when centerfielder Jared Mitchell led off with a walk, stole second base, advanced to third on a Kluber wild pitch and scored on Blake Dean's RBI grounder.

Stetson, however, rebounded with two runs in the bottom of the frame as third baseman Braedyn Pruitt and DH Brian Pruitt delivered run-scoring singles.

The Hatters increased the lead to 4-1 in the second when second baseman Casey Frawley provided an RBI single and a second run scored when Dean misplayed the ball in left field.

Adam Tindle's two-run double highlighted a three-run Stetson fifth inning and Brian Pruitt singled home another run in the seventh to account for the final margin.

Jordan finished with two singles and a double to pace the Hatters' 11-hit attack. Mitchell provided a spark for LSU, reaching base on three occasions. The freshman for New Iberia, La. singled, walked and was hit by a pitch while scoring the Tigers' lone run.
