Tigers eye Texas signal caller

LSU is looking to sign at least one quarterback in the 2008 class and possibly two with the second one being a dual-threat type.

Darron Thomas of Houston (Texas) Aldine definitely fits the bill as the dual-threat type and he has his eye on the Tigers at this point.

Thomas, a 6-2, 190-pounder with 4.6 speed, threw for 1,105 yards and ran for more than 700 last season with 19 total scores (7 passing and 12 rushing).

Last weekend, the talented signal-caller was in Baton Rouge for junior day at LSU and it opened his eyes up to everything the Tigers had to offer.

"It was a real good trip," he said. "I learned a lot about the program and it definitely made me interested in going there. I've talked with coaches from Texas A&M and Minnesota, but when I heard LSU was interested, I was pretty excited about that."

Thomas talked one-on-one with head coach Les Miles last weekend and the headman let him know he was interested.

"He basically told me to stay focused in school and that my SAT score was good enough," said Thomas. "I liked him because he wasn't too up tight. He joked around and made me feel comfortable, but at the same time I know it will be all business when it comes to football. We talked about an offer and he said one should be coming soon."

One advantage Thomas has on some other quarterbacks in his class is that he plans to enroll at the school of his choice in January 2008 so that he can get a leg up on the competition. That also means he will make his decision sooner than others.

"I'm graduating early, so I'll enroll in whichever school I pick in the spring semester," said Thomas. "So, hopefully I'll have made a decision by the time next football season starts."

Schools such as Texas A&M, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Minnesota and Northwestern are recruiting Thomas as both a wide receiver and a quarterback, but he said LSU is strictly recruiting him as a quarterback.

How does he feel about playing quarterback and the Tigers?

"I would love to stay at quarterback and the fact that they only want me there sounds real good to me," Thomas said. "I like LSU's campus and I've been a fan of theirs growing up. They have really good coaches, but the fact that I always liked them adds a little extra."
