Waggner gets first offer

Clinton (La.) is home to one of the top cornerbacks in the South in Prentiss Waggner and college coaches outside of the Bayou State are starting to recognize that.

Prentiss Waggner, a 6-2, 185-pound cover guy with 4.5 speed, was a Class 2A First Team All-State selection as a junior and was even voted 2A Defensive MVP for his outstanding performance. All he did was pick off 16 passes, broke up 14 more and registered 70 tackles on the year which shows why he took home the state's top honor in his classification.

When you factor in Waggner's 31 catches for 799 yards and 13 scores then it becomes obvious just how talented this young man is when he straps on his cleats and shoulder pads.

At first, the recruiting process was moving along rather slow but that all changed about 10 days ago.

"I got my first offer from Minnesota," Waggner told Scout.com. "I'm getting all kinds of stuff and text messages from a lot of coaches now. It's pretty tough to name them all but the main ones right now are Minnesota, LSU, Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Florida and Michigan."

This past weekend, Waggner took in LSU's Spring Game and he spent a little time talking to the Tigers' headman.

"I went to the spring game on Saturday and talked to coach Miles for a while," Waggner said. "We talked about what he likes about me and how he wants to get me to camp to work with me more before they offer."

Waggner hopes that his trip to LSU will not be the last one he takes this spring as he wants to take in a couple of other visits before Clinton starts spring practice in May.

"I would like to try and check out a couple of other places like Tennessee, Georgia and Florida but I don't know if my schedule is going to allow it," he said.

Note: Waggner will attend the Scout.com Combine in Charlotte so stay tuned for more on this outstanding cornerback prospect for 2008.
