E.J. Manuel says it was awesome

LSU had one of the top quarterbacks in the country in town this week for an unofficial trip and the visit was more than he ever expected.

"It was awesome," said E. J. Manuel as he was headed to the airport early Thursday morning. "We didn't know what to expect but this was the best visit we've been on. We've been to Virginia Tech, Virginia, Maryland, Marshall and Duke and then we are going to Miami this weekend and Penn State the next weekend. This trip definitely set the bar high."

The Virginia Beach (Va.) Bayside product got to talk to all of the coaches during his stay and also took a little time to drive South to New Orleans.

"I talked with coach (Gary) Crowton (offensive coordinator) for a little while and we watched film for about an hour," Manuel said. "We spent most of our time with coach (Les) Miles and the coach recruiting me, coach (D.J.) McCarthy."

What did the coaches have to say?

"They all said that they loved what I bring to the table and they wanted to sign a big-time quarterback in this class," said Manuel, who claims offers from LSU, Alabama, Miami, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Virginia, Duke and Oregon.

"They want someone that is athletic enough to make something happen when things break down and that can get the ball to all of the talented receivers they have."

Manuel said that he got in town on Tuesday and before he left the airport he already had a good feeling about LSU.

"As soon as we got off the plane we ran into JaMarcus Russell and talked to him for a while," said Manuel. "He was headed to Washington to talk to the Redskins but we sat down and talked for a few minutes. That was kind of like "Wow" that could be me one day."

Once he left the airport and headed over to campus, Manuel met with the coaches and started the grand tour of the campus.

"The facilities were great all-around especially that academic center," he said. "They really stress academics and on you getting a degree not just playing football."

Before Manuel's visit came to an end, he spent some time talking to coach Miles and coach McCarthy about the future.

"We talked about what they wanted to do with signing a quarterback and how I felt about LSU," said Manuel. "They let me know how bad they wanted me and now I have to sit back and take everything in these next two weeks and just process it. I loved my trip to LSU and they are definitely one of the top teams on my list."
