Damien Jackson is a big hitter

For the 2007 class, Louisiana had two of the top safeties in the country in Chad Jones and Stefoin Francois.

The Bayou State may not have that same caliber of guys for 2008 but Pineville's Damien Jackson is someone college coaches are keeping tabs on.

Jackson is a 6-2, 175 pound safety that reportedly runs a consistent 4.6 (40).

He plays free safety in the Rebels' secondary but his style of play may make him a better fit for moving to strong at the next level.

"The kid loves to play in the box and loves to hit," said Pineville head coach Mike Richard. "He has good range and good awareness but he has such good instincts when he plays in the box that leads some to think he will play strong."

Jackson has not picked up any offers up to this point but he said that several coaches said they will be stopping by during the spring.

"LSU, Alabama, La. Tech and Colorado all said they were coming," Jackson said. "I get a lot of stuff from Miami and Arkansas too and I think they are coming too."

The Central Louisiana standout is taking a wait-and-see approach to the recruiting process but he knows what he is looking for in a school.

"Academics are the first thing and then a school that has a history for winning," he said. "I want to be successful on and off the field so the school that gives the best opportunity to do that is where I will go."

Note** Jackson will be at the Scout.com All-American Combine in New Orleans on Saturday.
