A new offer for Jerricho Nelson

One of Louisiana's top running backs is Destrehan's Jerricho Nelson and he recently picked up a verbal offer from one of his favorites.

"I now have an offer from LSU," said Nelson, who was Destrehan's leading rusher as a junior with 1,069 yards and 14 touchdowns on 164 carries. "About a week ago I sent a text to coach (Larry) Porter (running backs coach) and then I called him. He said he was going to be bringing me some good news soon and then he later told my coach I had an offer. I haven't gotten it in writing yet so right now it's just a verbal but he said I'd be getting it in writing soon."

With the verbal from LSU, Nelson (5-11, 195, 4.6) said that he has four offers but two more SEC powers are hinting that an offer is in the works.

"Now I have LSU, Ole Miss, Louisiana Tech and Miami," he said. "I talked to Auburn today after they came to the school and he said they are going to be offering soon. Then coach (John) Hevesy (offensive line coach) texted me yesterday and I called him and he told me that he will be down here for our spring game. He said he thinks they are going to offer too."

Nelson said that with five Division-I prospects on his team there have been a lot of coaches calling and stopping by school this spring.

All of the interest can make the recruiting process a little more difficult but he said that he has some schools that he is keeping a close eye on.

"I'm watching Louisiana Tech, Miami, Florida, LSU, USC, Alabama, Auburn and Arkansas," he said.

What is it that stands out with the schools on his list?

Louisiana Tech—"They have one of my old coaches there and they mainly run the same offense we run too."

Miami—"When I camped out there I really liked it and they said they like me as a safety and as a running back. I really like the idea of playing safety too."

Florida—"They won it last year and they basically run the same offense we run at my high school. They said they don't have many running backs and I'd fit in good."

LSU—"That's close to home and they like to play a lot of running backs. I've got a good friend (Jai Eugene) on the team and he says he loves it there."

USC—"Thy have been real successful and seem to always recruit the best players in the country."

Alabama—"I was just talking to them and I like how they run their program."

Auburn—"They have a tradition with running backs and have talked about how they would use me."

Arkansas—I talked to coach (Roger) Herring after he came down here and he was just telling me about how it is and how I need to come to camp."
