Hatcher likes LSU

Karnell Hatcher is one of Florida's top safeties and one of LSU's top priorities for 2008.

The 6-2, 185-pounder out of Delray Beach-Atlantic is a big-hitter in the secondary that recorded 65 tackles and two interceptions as a junior.

So far Karnell Hatcher has received 30 offers but he is not ready to narrow his focus.

"I haven't really started to narrow things down yet," said Hatcher. "I was surprised to get an offer from LSU because I hadn't really had much contact with the coaches. But I talked with coach Mack (D.J. McCarthy) and he said after they saw my tapes, they were ready to offer me."

McCarthy is going out of his way to let Hatcher know how big of a priority he is in this class and he recently made a trip to the Sunshine State to let him know just that.

"He didn't stay long and we didn't talk because they can't really say a whole lot at this point," said Hatcher. "I've talked to him on the phone a few times and my parents really like him."

Although, Hatcher has not had the opportunity to meet McCarty in person he said their relationship is starting to grow.

"I was very glad he came down to meet me," said Hatcher. "He's down to earth and cool to talk to. He seems like the kind of guy I could play for and get a long with."

Hatcher said that he plans on visiting LSU either this summer or in the fall and even though he's never set foot on the campus he has heard a little about what LSU has to offer.

"I like the location, being in a big city," he said. "I also know the type of safeties they can produce. When you see players taken from a school in the draft it just shows that they work hard in the weight room and that the school can produce NFL players."

This summer Hatcher has only scheduled one camp so far, a team camp at UCF.

When it comes to decision time for the talented safety he said that staying close to home or leaving Florida will not be a big deal for him.

"I'll be looking for a school with a good location and whether or not they have the major I want," said Hatcher. "It will also depend on how well I get along with the coaches."
