Jackson named to Hendricks Watch List

LSU's Tyson Jackson is among 27 players from across the country who have been named to the preseason watch list for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award, the Hendricks Foundation announced on Monday.

The Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award is named in honor of college football's first three-time first team All-American. Hendricks starred at the University of Miami before going on to a 15-year NFL career that saw him be a part of four Super Bowl titles and participate in eight Pro Bowls.

Jackson, a junior defensive end from Edgard, La., enters his second year as a starter for the Tigers in 2007. A second team All-Southeastern Conference pick a year ago, Jackson has been listed as a preseason All-America heading into 2007.

Last year in his first season as a starter, Jackson led the Tigers and ranked fifth in the SEC with 8.5 sacks. He also led LSU with 10.5 tackles for losses for a Tiger defense that ranked No. 3 in the nation in total defense and No. 4 in scoring defense.

Jackson was named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week for his play in LSU's win over Alabama last year. In that contest, Jackson had four tackles, one sack and broke up two passes in the 28-14 Tiger victory.

For his career, Jackson has played in 26 games with 12 starts. He has 50 career tackles, 12 tackles for losses and 10.5 sacks.

The Hendricks Award selects its winner based on the players' on-field performance, winning attitude, leadership abilities and contributions to his school and the community. A list of five semifinalists will be announced in early November with three finalists being named on Nov. 26. The winner will be named on Dec. 6.
