Brandon LaFell, Will Arnold, and Jacob Cutrera were once again absent this afternoon. Perry Riley did not participate again this afternoon but he was on the side watching like this morning. Other players that I did not see at practice that were not in the morning practice report were Will Blackwell, Carnell Stewart and Ciron Black.
With LaFell out, Terrance Toliver was once again running as the #2 wide receiver in drills. Jared Mitchell lined up as the #3 receiver behind Doucet. Andrew Hatch and TC McCartney were having a little trouble getting the wide receivers the ball during warm-ups but I don't recall seeing any dropped passes.
The running backs were working on running routes out of the backfield again. The tailback would motion out of the backfield and run a little 5 yard crossing route then have the ball drilled at him by Jimmy Welker. Coach Porter was pleased with all the guys' routes and all of them caught the ball, but I was impressed to see Keiland Williams snatching the ball out of the air with his hands and not trapping it against his chest like the other guys.
When we first arrived at practice the defensive backs were working on their foot speed in a ladder drill. I was kind of surprised to see the coaches having Ron Brooks line up first in this drill. Later on in practice coach Pelini was working with the backups and younger guys on pre-snap reads and where to go for different coverages.
The offensive linemen were working on blocking schemes. It was hard to see who was running with which group with so many people missing. The defensive linemen were also lining up in many different orders during their drills.
Ricky Jean Francois was at practice and dressed out but he did not appear to be participating in the time the media was allowed.
That's all for this afternoon but check back tomorrow evening for an update on the second scrimmage of fall camp.
