Southern Cal, the preseason No. 1 ranked team, has four players on the ESPN.com All-America team with the second-ranked Tigers following with three selections.
Heading the list for the Tigers is perhaps the nation's top defender in defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey. Dorsey, who earned First-Team All-America honors last year as a junior, posted 64 tackles and 8.5 tackles for losses in 2006.
Of Dorsey, Maisel said, "he has a motor that never shuts down. Dorsey likely would have been a first round draft choice last April, but decided to come back for unfinished business – like a degree and an SEC Championship."
The other Tiger named to the squad on the defensive side of the ball is senior linebacker Ali Highsmith. Highsmith enters his third season as a full-time starter for the Tigers in 2007. Last year, Highsmith posted 63 tackles, including 5.5 for losses and three sacks for the Tigers.
Maisel said of Highsmith, "he's safety sized, but there's nothing safe about this senior. Highsmith brings the brawn to go with his speed and his motor. The Tigers will go a long way because of this defense, and Highsmith's one of the unit's emotional leaders. Get to know him this season. You'll be watching him play for years."
Senior offensive lineman Will Arnold also made ESPN.com's All-America team despite playing in only five games a year ago. Arnold, who appears to be fully healed after suffering knee and ankle injuries in 2006, can play both guard and tackle for the Tigers.
Maisel said of Arnold, "this is our one leap of faith. Injuries have limited him to 18 starts over the last three seasons. He only made five starts last year and was still named second team All-SEC. So let's say he stays healthy all year and see what happens."
Other Southeastern Conference players on the ESPN.com Preseason All-America team include:
Kentucky quarterback Andre' Woodson and Arkansas running back Darren McFadden. LSU faces Woodson and Kentucky in Lexington on Oct. 13, while McFadden and the Razorbacks come to Tiger Stadium on Nov. 23.
