Miles, Tigers prep for final scrimmage

Coach Les Miles met with the media following this afternoon's practice to discuss his thoughts on fall camp and what to expect in tomorrow's scrimmage.

Miles seemed very happy with the way the Tigers closed practice today. He repeated many times that he liked the speed of today's practice and how it was a great practice to bring camp to a close. The team ended today with two minute drills, and Miles commented on how it was one of the best two minute drills he had ever seen. Overall he seemed very satisfied with the work the Tigers put in this camp. He also mentioned a few team fights that broke out. He would not mention specific players but did say they were between offensive and defensive lineman. When asked if he thought fights like that were good for the team, he talked about how camp wears on even the best of friends, and cited Rudy Niswanger and Kyle Williams getting into it once at practice a few years ago. He went on to say as long as that passion and intensity carries on over to games he has no problem with it.

One of the first questions Coach Miles was asked was about Chad Jones playing running back. He said that Jones does want to be in the mix at punt returner and both he and the coaches wanted to him to work more on ball security if he is going to be in that role, and that is why he went through some running back drills today. When asked about the possibility of Jones playing offense, Miles said there is certainly a chance that could happen but right now they really like how he is progressing on defense and they don't want to do anything to hinder that progression.

When asked about Matt Flynn's status, Miles said he was held out for precautionary reasons and that his arm was experiencing "a little fatigue." He did mention that Flynn threw a TD today in the two minute drill and he is expected to participate in tomorrow's scrimmage.

Speaking of tomorrow's scrimmage, Miles said the team will work for little over two hours tomorrow in Tiger Stadium, and the scrimmage will consist of an actual scrimmage portion, as well as different situational situations and some work with the kicking game. Glen Dorsey will participate in the scrimmage. Perry Riley and Richard Dickson are expected to participate. Jacob Cutrera will not participate. Will Arnold and Demetrius Byrd are questionable for the scrimmage. Miles did say Byrd suffered a leg bruise after colliding with Chevis Jackson today at practice. He also said the injury is not believed to be serious but is very painful. Miles also mentioned that Andrew Decker had some type of neck injury, but wouldn't give the extent of it.

Miles was also asked about the wide receiver rotation and if camp had helped settle anything. He said nobody has really earned anything yet and you can expect to see different guys in different sets. Miles did single out, in this order, Early Doucet, Brandon Lafell, RJ Jackson, Jared and Chris Mitchell, Terrance Toliver, and Demetrius Byrd as guys that will likely see the field. He also singled out both Mitchell's and Toliver for making a lot of plays in today's practice. He said Trindon Holliday will be used in a situational role.

Finally, Miles was asked if he was ready to name Ryan Perrilloux as the No. 2 quarterback yet following his performance in camp. Miles went on to say that Perrilloux had a good camp, but he was not ready to name him No. 2 yet. However, he did say it could happen after the scrimmage tomorrow
