Fall practice for the 2008 squad will begin on Saturday, September 15 and continue through Tuesday, October 23. The Tigers open the ‘08 season on February 22 versus Indiana in Alex Box Stadium.
LSU sophomore catcher Sean Ochinko enjoyed a splendid summer in the Cape Cod League, the prestigious wooden-bat league for college players.
Ochinko, a 2007 Freshman all-Southeastern Conference selection, was the second-best hitter for the Yarmouth-Dennis (Mass.) Red Sox, helping lead the team to the CCL championship. The Parkland, Fla. native batted .315 (39-for-124) with nine doubles, eight homers, 23 RBI and 24 runs.
Ochinko also participated in the Cape Cod League All-Star Game in July.
Sophomore outfielder Blake Dean, a native of Crestview, Fla., played for the Wareham (Mass.) Gatemen in the Cape Cod League and batted .250 (31-for-124) with three doubles, four homers, 15 RBI and 13 runs.
Sophomore infielder Ryan Schimpf was one of the top hitters in the Central Illinois Collegiate League, batting .265 (45-for-170) with 10 doubles, two triples, two homers, 26 RBI, 30 runs and six stolen bases. Schimpf, a Covington, La. product, participated in the CICL All-Star Game.
Junior infielder Chris McGhee, an Alexandria, La. native, was the fifth-leading hitter in the New York Collegiate Baseball League, batting .350 (55-for-157) with eight doubles, two triples, 15 RBI , 28 runs and 15 stolen bases.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Paul Bertuccini was 3-1 with a 1.14 ERA in eight appearances (four starts) in the New York Collegiate League. The product of Metairie, La. recorded 35 strikeouts and 11 walks in 31.2 innings, and opponents batted just .195 against him.
Junior right-hander Nolan Cain pitched effectively in the Valley Baseball League in Virginia, registering 45 strikeouts in 32.2 innings. Cain, a product of Cantonment, Fla., made 20 appearances during the summer, including three starts.
Sophomore right-hander Matt Jackson of Haughton, La. was 2-2 with a 2.23 ERA and a .183 opponent batting average in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. Junior southpaw Blake Martin of Boaz, Ala. recorded a 2.72 ERA in 39.2 innings while posting 38 strikeouts in the Northwoods League.
Senior infielder Jason Lewis of Crawfordville, Fla. collected eight doubles, four homers and 24 RBI in the Coastal Plain League, and sophomore catcher Kevin Farnsworth of Baton Rouge was an All-Star in the Southern Collegiate League, batting .304 (34-for-112) with 11 doubles, two homers, 15 RBI and 18 runs.
Sophomore infielder Kellen Bozeman collected nine doubles and four homers in 101 at-bats in the Atlantic Baseball Confederation.
