PRACTICE REPORT: Friday morning 8-24

The Tigers begin short-week preparations for Thursday's upcoming season opener with Mississippi State. Here is Jeremy Kenny's full report.

It is officially game week and the Tigers were back inside the Charles McClendon practice facility today after having yesterday off.

Today's practice was a very relaxed one. The team was dressed in jerseys, shorts, and helmets. It is important to remember that today is being treated the day after a game, so a light practice was to be expected.

Both Al Woods and Tremaine Johnson were back at practice today with no limitations. Stefoin Francois was also back in his normal defensive purple jersey today, shedding the green non-contact jersey from Wednesday. Jacob Cutrera was back practicing today for the first time in a while. He was wearing a green non-contact jersey and a large stabilizing brace on his right arm, but he participated fully in drills. Derrick Odom was not at today's practice as expected.

Kirston Pittman continued running as the first team right defensive end opposite Tyson Jackson this morning. Ricky Jean Francois was at practice this morning but did not have his helmet on when I saw him and did not appear to be going through drills.

The defensive backs were going through their pregame warm-up drills, working on back pedaling and breaking on the ball. Chad Jones, Ron Brooks, and John Williams were all very impressive in how quickly they changed directions to break on the ball.

The running backs were working on running routes out of the backfield. Charles Scott was still running as the No. 1 tailback. Keiland Williams did not have the visor on his helmet this morning.

The wide receivers were working with the quarterbacks the entire time the media allowed in practice, which was only the first period. Instead of running their routes, the receivers would just lineup where their route is supposed to end, and the quarterbacks would throw them the ball from there. Both Ryan Perrilloux and Jarrett Lee had a little trouble with over throwing the receivers in this drill. This drill also offered some insight into what the depth may look like at wide receiver. Behind Early Doucet appeared to be Jared Mitchell, Trindon Holliday, RJ Jackson, Josh McManus, and Demetrius Byrd. Behind Brandon Lafell appeared to be Chris Mitchell, Ricky Dixon, and Terrance Toliver. Whenever they lined up in 3 receiver sets, Doucet would line up in the slot and Chris Mitchell on the outside.

That's it for this morning's practice. Matt Deville will have some more player interviews later today, and we'll be back tomorrow morning for more practice coverage.
