LSU maintains No. 2 ranking in both polls

A week into the college football season and LSU remained No. 2 in the nation in the USA Today Coaches Poll and the Associated Press Top 25, which were both released on Tuesday.

LSU picked up a total 1,417 points, including four first place votes, in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Tigers accumulated 1,542 points and five first place votes in the AP Poll. Southern Cal is No. 1 in both polls.

The Tigers, who are coming off a 45-0 win over Mississippi State last Thursday in Starkville, return to action on Saturday, hosting No. 9 Virginia Tech in Tiger Stadium. It will mark only the third time that a pair of top 10 teams will meet in a non-conference game in history of Tiger Stadium.

The last time a top 10-ranked LSU team faced another top 10 non-conference opponent in Tiger Stadium came in 1987 when the fourth-ranked Tigers and seventh-ranked Ohio State battled to a 13-13 tie. The only other time it happened came in 1959 when No. 1 LSU posted a 10-0 win over No. 9 TCU.

Virginia Tech (1-0) opened its season last week with a 17-7 victory over East Carolina.
