Pittman, who missed the past two seasons with injuries, recorded eight tackles to pace a Tiger defense that limited the Hokies to just 149 yards of offense. Virginia Tech managed to cross midfield just twice in the contest and entered the LSU redzone just one time.
Pittman, a defensive end from Garyville, La., has started both games for the Tigers this year, playing a key role for a defense that is allowing only 3.5 points and 147.5 yards per game.
The honor is the first for an LSU player this year and also marks the first time that Pittman has been recognized by the league for his performance during his career.
Other honors handed out by the league office on Monday include: Florida quarterback Tim Tebow as the offensive player of the week; Mississippi State linebacker Gabe O'Neal as the defensive player of the week; South Carolina punter/kicker Ryan Succop as the special teams player of the week; Kentucky guard Jason Leger as the offensive lineman of the week; and Alabama running back Terry Grant as the freshman of the week.
