Matt Flynn was practicing again today with both of his ankles taped. He went through drills again today and showed no signs of the ankle bothering him. He and Perrilloux continue to split snaps with the first team. The only time Flynn did not participate today was when the offense went to run the option against the scout team. Like yesterday, Perrilloux ran with the first team in this drill and Flynn watched from the side.
When the running backs worked with the quarterbacks today they lined up in the slot and worked on running pass routes, mostly drags and 10 yard comebacks. Keiland Williams really struggled catching the ball in these drills, dropping a number of passes. On the very last rep of the drill Stevan Ridley made a very nice diving catch on a ball thrown high and behind him that drew praise from the rest of the running backs along with Coach Porter and Coach Crowton.
Today the linebackers worked on a lot of pass coverage drills. This is the first time I've ever seen them do a drill like at practice, and most of them looked pretty awkward doing it. They had to stay with the tight end running down field, then find the ball in the air with their back to the LOS and make a play on it. I'm not sure how often they practice this because I've never seen them do it, but none of them looked very comfortable trying to find the ball and make a play on it.
Last night in the chat there were some inquiries about who was running as the 2nd and 3rd receivers. Well today in practice Brandon Lafell and Jared Mitchell were always the first two receivers in drills, and after that it was pretty much line up as you please. Chris Mitchell, Ricky Dixon, Josh McManus, Trindon Holliday, and RJ Jackson all lined up as the next pair after Lafell and Mitchell in some order at one point or another. After working with the quarterbacks, they worked on blocking drills again. When Trindon Holliday came up he pancaked the scout team DB he was facing. As you might imagine that caused quite a reaction from everyone watching the drills, including players, coaches, trainers, and any other on lookers.
That's all for Wednesday's practice. Practice is closed to the media for the rest of the week.
