LSU edges USC in Master Coaches Poll

The Master Coaches moved LSU back to No. 1 in their poll, this time the Tigers stand alone. Last week's top team USC managed to squeak past Washington 27-24 in Seattle on Saturday.

But their lackluster performance provided LSU the opportunity to regain their No. 1 ranking. After a sloppy first half, the top-ranked Tigers shut out Tulane in the second half of the game and LSU defeated their in-state rival 34-9.

Upsets claimed the rest of the top five from last week's Master Coaches Poll, allowing for California, Ohio State and Wisconsin to move in. No. 3 Cal went in to Eugene and defeated No. 10 Oregon on the road for the first time in seven attempts behind tremendous play from Heisman hopeful DeSean Jackson. Oregon remained at No. 10. No. 4 Ohio State continued to roll with an easy victory over Minnesota, and No. 5 Wisconsin survived in a 37-34 thriller against Michigan State in Madison.

The biggest upset came from Boulder, Colorado, as third-ranked Oklahoma fell a week before the Red River Showdown against Texas. The Buffaloes battled back from a 24-7 deficit to knock off the Sooners 27-24 on a last second field goal. Oklahoma dropped five spots to No. 8. Florida fell just three spots to No. 6 in the Master Coaches Poll after suffering a crushing defeat at home to unranked Auburn.

South Florida made the biggest move in this week's poll after proving that last year's win over West Virginia was not a fluke. The 9th-ranked Bulls stifled the Mountaineer offense, holding Steve Slaton to just 55 yards on the ground and knocking quarterback Pat White out of the game in the first half. West Virginia fell all the way out the Top 10 to No. 13 in the Master Coaches Poll.

"I never thought I would see this many highly ranked teams go down this early," Georgia legend Vince Dooley said on a weekend where five of the Top 10 teams suffered upsets. "I think it's great for college football. Fans of teams like (No. 9) South Florida and (No. 12) Kentucky have real reason to be excited."

Nebraska returns to the Master Coaches Poll this week at No. 24 and is joined by unbeatens No. 22 Cincinnati and No. 23 Purdue. Alabama, Michigan State and Penn State dropped out of the poll this week.
