LSU opened things up

In July, Dunnellon High School product Lerentee McCray (6'2, 200, 4.5) gave a verbal commitment to the University of Miami with a mutual understanding between himself and the university that he had intentions of visiting other schools. Over this past weekend the head-hunting linebacker paid a visit to Death Valley for the LSU vs. Auburn game.

"It was pretty nice," said McCray. "I had a really good time. I went on this trip alone. When I first arrived on Saturday morning I checked out the tailgating area. It was wild. I am kind of use to the tailgating scene, but at LSU it was different. I mean when we were trying to drive down the road there were people tailgating all over the place and they didn't want to move out of the street. It was crazy."'s 4-star linebacker was able to meet some other recruits at the game as well as some of the LSU coaching staff afterwards.

"At the game, I hung out with Moses McCray and Greg Shaw," McCray stated. "They seemed like cool dudes. We talked about LSU, recruiting and about some of the other schools we are looking at making visits to.

"After the game, I spoke with coach (Bradley Dale) Peveto, coach (Doug) Mallory and coach (Les) Miles," McCray continued. "They really weren't pressuring me to decommit from Miami or anything, but I could tell they really wanted me to go to LSU. They told me to take my time and to think things through before I make my official decision."

The game itself was a cliffhanger with LSU pulling out a win with 1 second left on the clock and the Florida native was glued to his seat.

"The game was crazy," McCray exclaimed. "I didn't think it was going to be that close going down to the last seconds. I was surprised.

"During the game though I was watching Ali Highsmith and how he played," McCray added. "After watching him I definitely think I could fit in with LSU's defense especially if the coaches could coach me up like they did Ali."

On Sunday McCray was able to see what else LSU had to offer him.

"I had a few hosts for the weekend," McCray explained. "I do not remember them all, but I do remember Shomari Clemons. He showed me around some. I saw the dorms, the Academic facilities, football facilities and pretty much the entire school. I saw everything that I wanted to see on this trip.

"The one thing that stood out to me the most was the LSU fans," McCray said. "They were crazy and loud at the game. They were just really crazy and I liked that a lot."

Did the trip do enough to completely change his mind with Miami?

"Overall I give my visit an 8," McCray answered. "I wouldn't say my visit totally changed how I felt towards Miami, but I would say it opened things up some.

"I still want to make a couple of more visits too," he said. "I am not sure as to where just yet, but I am considering Tennessee, Wisconsin and West Virginia. I should have my mind made up by February."

Note: McCray informed that so far this season his team is 4-3 and he currently has around 116 tackles, 5 sacks, 1 interception and 2 fumble recoveries.
