There were no unexpected absences from today's practice. Keiland Williams was back at practice with his left ankle taped after missing practice on Tuesday. Charles Alexander was again practicing in shorts and going through drills completely. Ricky Jean Francois was back with the track team after practicing on Tuesday. And Jared Mitchell was back at practice today after missing Tuesday for the baseball game.
Jarrett Lee was holding down the #1 quarterback spot throughout practice again today. For most of the drills Lee and Andrew Hatch are both doing their reps at the same time, but when they do an individual rep drill Lee always goes with the first team guys.
Another position that is up for grabs this spring is along the offensive line at right tackle, with the two front runners being Joseph Barksdale and Jarvis Jones. And for the time being it appears Barksdale has at least a slight lead, as he is always running with the first team during drills. Barksdale and Jones were both part of the 2007 recruiting class, and the other offensive linemen from that class are coming along nicely. Ernest McCoy, TBob Hebert, and Josh Dworaczyk all have a firm grasp as the #2 at a position on the offensive line, and all of them drew high praise from Coach Studrawa during drills today.
For the first time today, we got to see the entire defense on the field at the same time. They were working on position responsibilities defending the run out of the nickel and dime packages. There was a lot of coaching going on during this session and not much action, but it was a good way to get a better idea of the depth chart at each position. The first team defensive line from left to right was Tyson Jackson, Drake Nevis, Al Woods, and Kirston Pittman. The second team defensive line was Tremaine Johnson, Kentravis Aubrey, Marlon Favorite, and Rahim Alem. The nickel linebackers were Kelvin Sheppard and Darry Beckwith, and Beckwith was the dime linebacker. Jai Eugene was backed up by Phelon Jones at right cornerback. Chris Hawkins was backed up by Ron Brooks at left cornerback. Danny McCray was the nickel, Chad Jones was the dime. Curtis Taylor and Harry Coleman were the safeties, but both of them lined up in the box at different times as the strong safety.
Former Tigers Jacob Hester and Shawn Jordan were at today's practice.
The team will have Friday off and scrimmage on Saturday.
