Stewart takes in LSU

Jonathan Stewart of Shreveport-Byrd was considered one of the biggest sleeper prospects in Louisiana for 2009. He has the makings of a big-time linebacker with his size and nose for the ball but he was flying under the radar. Well, after the past few days he is no longer a sleeper and coaches are well aware of what he brings to the table.

Stewart (6-4, 225, 4.6) picked up an offer from Mississippi State, Texas Tech, Arizona during the early part of April and this weekend he was on the LSU campus for an unofficial visit.

What did he do over the weekend and did he pick up an offer from the Tigers?

“We went to the spring game and watched that then we went to the players’ picnic at the basketball arena,” Stewart said. “I talked to coach (Bradley Dale) Peveto and coach (Doug) Mallory and they said they couldn’t offer me right now but they are going to come watch me in the spring and they want me to come to their first camp this summer. So there may be a possibility of an offer coming later.”

If that offer does come from the reigning BCS national champions then it may be tough to pass on but at the same time Stewart isn’t ready to close the door on anyone else at this time.

“It’s a big-time program (LSU) and they just won the national championship so, of course, that is an offer you want to pickup,” Stewart said. “They’ve got two championships in the past five years which is impressive but at the same time you have to keep your options open.”
