Two at the top

The nation's No. 3 offensive guard is keeping his recruiting options open, but two schools sit alone at the top of the Utah-native's watch list. What universities are catching the eye of four-star prospect John Martinez?

LSU and USC are at the top of my list right now,” said John Martinez. “Those are the two schools that I am definitely taking visits to this summer.”

LSU Offensive Coordinator Gary Crowton, a Provo, Utah native, is recruiting Martinez for the Tigers and he has been staying in touch with his targets out West.

“Coach Crowton came to visit the school this past week,” Martinez said. “It was definitely good to see him swing by.”

Martinez (6-3, 265) has already been to LSU one time as he made the trip with one of his teammates, Lynn Katoa, for the Arkansas game last November.

Although the Tigers fell to the Hawgs, he was impressed by both the level of play and contagious atmosphere he witnessed.

“It was a good experience,” Martinez said. “I have definitely never been to a stadium that big. The fans were great. Even though LSU lost, everyone was still partying like they had won. My coach says that the Southeastern Conference is in another league from the rest.”

Without spring ball in Utah, Martinez says that his summer plans are to balance his visits with a heavy dose of school.

“I just got my ACT scores back, and I made an 18,” he said. “I just want to stay on top of school by continuing to hit the books.”

Note: Martinez was selected First Team All-State 4A by the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News as a junior. He says he benches 345 pounds, squats 445 and has a 27-inch vertical jump.
