LSU leads for Tampa product

LSU coach Nick Saban is looking for athletic linebackers and he apparently found one in Wharton-Tampa, Fla. running back/linebacker Larry Edwards (6-2, 220, 4.5).

Edwards showed his superb athleticism by running No. 1 at tailback for Wharton and rushing for more than 1,035 yards and 14 touchdowns. His tasks did not end there as he also served as the mainstay on his squad's defense. He visited LSU for the South Carolina game and he said he could sum up his trip in one quick phrase.

"I rated it a ‘10'," Edwards told Tiger Rag. "I thought the visit was very informational and it showed me how much LSU is strict with academics, along with athletics. It also showed me what the college atmosphere will be like when I get there."

Edwards has not been on any other official visits but plans to take one to North Carolina for sure. Other schools in the running are Georgia, Nebraska and possibly Florida, if the Gators decide to extend an offer. Those schools have a lot of ground to make up if they are going to top Edwards' experience at Tiger Stadium.

"I was speechless," said Edwards, who has a 2.7 GPA and is waiting on his SAT score. "I have never seen that many people in a stadium before for any kind of football game. I've never been around that many crazy fans. It was a lifetime experience."

LSU and North Carolina are still his top two choices but the Tigers have edged ahead since his visit. Look for this to come down to a Tigers/Tarheels battle once he makes his official visit to Chapel Hill, N.C.

Sonny's View: Edwards sounded upbeat and enthusiastic when he mentioned the Tigers and I look for Saban to land him unless LSU fills its needs at linebacker before he decides to commit.
