At 5-11, 193 pounds, Bumphis is one of the best in the country at making things happen with the ball in his hands. His skills have grabbed the attention of coaches all over the region.
“Coaches from LSU, Florida State, Alabama, and Kentucky came by my school to see me during practice,” Bumphis said. “I am up to 14 or 15 offers now, and they are all for wide receiver. From those offers, my top schools right now are LSU, Florida, Mississippi State, Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Tennessee, and Auburn.”
As is the case with most prospects, Bumphis is using his time off this summer to visit some of the schools he is interested in.
“I went to the Southern Miss camp already,” said the nation’s 22nd rated receiver. “It was pretty fun and I liked it. I’m trying to get to LSU for a visit too. We were supposed to go down there for a 7-on-7 tournament later in July but they decided not to go. I’m still going to try to make it down there at some point. And I might end up making a few other visits.”
It seems pretty apparent that LSU is a school that is weighing heavily on Bumphis’ mind at the moment, and for a variety of reasons.
“I love the competition level there,” Bumphis said. “Everyone there is so athletic. You get so much better just in practice because of the types of players you are going up against there. I also like that they find different ways to use their athletes. And they always try to get their players the ball in space.”
Another factor helping the Tigers’ cause is Bumphis’ teammate and LSU quarterback commitment Chris Garrett. The two hooked up 37 times last season for 787 yards and 12 touchdowns.
“Chris talks to me a lot about how nice the campus is,” said the 4-star receiver. “I haven’t been to LSU’s campus yet so he is always telling me I need to go down there and see it. He jokes around with me about going to LSU with him every once in a while, but really he’s letting me make my own decision.”
Aside from the help they are getting from Garrett, the LSU coaches have been making sure to stay in frequent contact with Bumphis to ensure they remain fresh in his mind.
“Coach Stud is my recruiting coordinator,” he said. “We talk every week or every other week. I actually just talked to Coach Crowton last week though. He was telling me how they want me to come in and play slot receiver to catch all the screens and underneath passes and get me the ball in space.”
Even though he is still planning on making some trips this summer, Bumphis wants to make sure to catch a few games this fall at some of the schools he is considering.
“I want to go to games at Alabama and Mississippi State,” Bumphis said. “I know I’ll be going to games at LSU and Florida. I’m not sure though which games will be official visits, or where I’m going for my official visits yet. I’ll probably end up using all five of them, unless I feel I’m ready. And I’m going to hold off on my commitment until after I take my visits.”
Note: Bumphis was unsure if he or Chris Garrett would be in attendance at LSU’s camp later this month.
