Montgomery Eyes Tigers

LSU already has one defensive end commitment for the 2009 class, and the coaches are looking to add a few more. One of the biggest names on their board is Sam Montgomery from Greenwood, South Carolina.

Montgomery has already made multiple visits to schools this summer and has a few more left on his plate before it's over.

"I've been to North Carolina, South Carolina, and Clemson for visits," Montgomery said. "I also went back to South Carolina and Clemson for camps. I'm still planning on going to LSU, Florida, Tennessee, and a few other places that are close by before I go back to school."

Montgomery is now 6-4, 230 pounds and claims a 4.4 in the 40, 300 bench, 415 squat, and 275 power clean. He terrorized opposing offenses in his junior season at Greenwood High School to the tune of 65 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, and 20 sacks. But perhaps even more impressive than all of those numbers is the number of offers he has received thus far.

"I have over 40 offers now," Montgomery said. "I'm still considering all of them right now, and I really mean that. It would be pointless for me to give you any kind of list right now, because it changes everyday. And I'm not planning on committing until the day before signing day. That's when things start to unravel and you get to see how everyone really is."

Even though he didn't name any schools in a list, LSU is one of those 40 offers he is considering, and he will be in attendance for the Tigers' camp later this month.

"I'm interested in learning more about LSU," said the nation's 7th ranked defensive end. "I know they have a very good defensive line coach, Coach Lane. He is my recruiting coach. And to tell you the truth, it's the coach's personality that really grabs my attention.

When I meet a coach I have different little tests for them to see what kind of person they are. When Coach Lane came to visit me at school, he was very patient. While he was waiting for me to come out he talked to all the different kids at my school. He didn't act like he was any better than anyone else. That really stood out to me and showed me that he was genuinely interested in me."

"I called him earlier in the summer," he continued. "And I talked to Coach Miles two or three weeks ago. I call the schools I'm interested in just to check on them and see what's been going on.

When I talked to the coaches from LSU they talk about my personality and heart. They talk about me as a person, not a player. They know there are plenty of people with the talent to play there, so they are looking for the ones with that extra heart and determination. I really respect that about them."

The 4 star prospect has already begun mapping out his visit schedule for the fall to follow his busy summer.

"I'll be taking all of my official visits and a lot of unofficial visits this fall," Montgomery said. "The unofficial visits will be to places close around here like Clemson and South Carolina. I'll be at South Carolina when they play LSU. I don't have them set up yet, but I know where I want to go for four of my official visits. And I don't know when any of them will be yet, but I can tell you LSU is one of them."
