Early interest for Johnson

Cypress Ridge is quickly becoming a spotlight for some of east Texas' top talent. Led this season at quarterback by Tiger-commit Russell Shepard, whose five-star appeal has drawn attention from every corner of the recruiting map, the Rams have several players that are benefiting from the exposure including 2010 wide receiver Kevin Johnson.

With Minnesota-commit Hassan Lipscomb healthy and running hard, Cy Ridge is hitting on all cylinders heading into crunch time.

A name that also belongs in the conversation when discussing the Ram's talent pool is Johnson (6-2, 190, 4.5), who is Shepard's favorite target.

"He is an unbelievable player," head coach Gary Thiebaud said. "He is actually just as athletic as Russell is, just with a thicker body. He is the lead candidate heading into next year at quarterback, though he can play some safety as well.

Cy Ridge is 6-2 heading into its final regular season game on Friday and Johnson is the Rams’ leading receiver with 33 receptions for 473 yards and nine touchdowns.

"At wide receiver he has been tremendous for us," Thiebaud said. "He is a speed guy with amazing hands. He is very strong, and a great blocker. Things that go unnoticed are that a lot of the big runs you see Russell and Hassan have are a result of Kevin putting the safety or cornerback down on the ground when he is blocking up the field. His knowledge of the game and maturity are extremely impressive. He is simply a very gifted athlete."

Johnson, who hopes to continue to turn heads as he makes his way into his senior season, is eager to get to know more about the Tigers.

"I was just talking the other day to Russell about coming down for camp in the summer," Johnson said. "I have grown up a fan of LSU and Ohio State, so those are the two schools that I am kind of waiting to see if I get offers from. I would be all over both. LSU would be pretty special though, with Russell being there and all."

Johnson, who went for two touchdowns in the Ram's game against Cy Falls on ESPNU, said that the letters are already coming in for his services.

"I get mail all the time from colleges," Johnson said. "I have been hearing a lot from schools like Oklahoma, Iowa, UCLA, Kansas State, LSU and Kansas. An offer from a school like LSU would definitely be a big thing."

Johnson currently holds an offer from Baylor, which he received after attending camp in Waco over the summer.
