"I am planning on getting over there for camp in the summer, because I am not going to be able to make it for the Junior Day on Jan. 31," said running back Ben Malena. "I got family from my mother's side over in Baton Rouge, so LSU is a school that I will be looking at just because I have relatives down there and grew up watching the Tigers.
"They are a great school, and I see them as one of those fantasy schools to go to," added Malena. "LSU is year in and year out one of the top programs in the nation, and you got to love that. Coach [Les] Miles is also one of the best head coaches in country, so there is a lot that appeals to me about the program."
What other teams will the Cedar Hill-native look into over the next year?
"I expect that at some point those teams will start looking at offering me, but I am not really worrying about that right now."
Possessing 4.55 speed, Malena prides himself as a downhill runner who runs behind his pads, using his vision and balance to make defenders miss.
Those abilities helped the junior back to carry his team deep into the Texas playoffs.
"We did really well this year, getting to the fifth round, which is the game right before the state championship," Malena said. "I finished up with 2,110 yards and 38 total touchdowns on 237 carries, which was great because I was coming off a sophomore season where I was injured a majority of the time.
"We are looking to take in one game further next season, so I am ready for that."
